Reclaiming the English Language

First, I would like to state very clearly that this page has nothing to do with homosexuality. I am not addressing anyone's sexual preferences. I am specifically addressing the hijacking of wonderful words that have previously enhanced our fantastically diverse language. Most specifically the word "gay".
My 16 year old son is working on a Civil War study project that included learning some civil war era patriotic songs. One of the songs on the list is When Johnny Comes Marching Home. When he first read through it he came to me after and asked if he could say "glad" instead of "gay" because he felt weird singing the word "gay".
Check out this article with several examples of hijacked words.
